I can’t find my motivation anymore.

I’m having a crisis of motivation.

I’ve come so far, and for so long my one true goal was a six-pack. I don’t know why, but I can’t find that fire anymore. Maybe I just got burnt out? Maybe I have lost focus because work is so consuming right now? Maybe the new goals are overwhelming to me (not the goals themselves, but HAVING them.)
I am very satisifed at work right now. It’s challenging and rewarding. But I hate feeling out of shape. It’s only been a few weeks, but I already feel like garbage.

I was told to never complain without a solution, so here’s one:
Maybe I should forfeit the money (or half of it, or whatever) and try to find a middle ground.

I’m just looking to start a conversation about this.

“I hate feeling out of shape. It’s only been a few weeks, but I already feel like garbage.”

I think the statement above exemplifies your desire to get fit, so my question is why do you think you’re starting to have such a hard time? What makes the challenges you face at work more rewarding than the challenges you are facing in the gym?

I would think that success in the gym would only serve to augment your happiness overall. Healthy, fit, and a great job? If you can conquer all that, what couldn’t you do?

True, I like that idea of “having it all”.
I am not trying to make excuses, I could say that I don’t have time for the gym b/c of work, but that’s not true. I know I could make time for anything. I think it’s a matter of focus and desire. I’m not focusing on the goal of a sixpack (even WITH all your help – this makes me sad), and I don’t have the desire for it anymore. Or maybe my desire to make lots of money is stronger. I’m in a funk!

Do you not think ‘having it all’ is possible?

What part of making lots of money is preventing you from making it to the gym? Time? You already realize that you have to make time.

Are making money and being fit mutually exclusive?

    No
    Motivation
    No

I just honestly don’t “want it” bad enough right now. I don’t know how to get to that point… I think I need a session with the Hypnotist :)

You already gave up, you’re just asking us for permission.

    Well, you have mine.

I’m very very disappointed that you see it that way. If I wanted to give up, I’d never update this blog again. I was looking for (from YOU especially) a way to tap into my previous desire and find it again.

Nah. You’re saying ‘I give up! Carry me!’. We can’t, we can only help you. If you don’t want it, there isn’t anything we can do further. You’re sending mixed signals.

Dude! You are going to continue on this struggle until one thing changes. You have to start enjoying it. You need to look forward to going to the gym because it will improve you body. You need to enjoy eating healthily for the good feeling it gives that you are changing your body for the better.

This I fully admit is easier said than done, but think motivation only really gets you started and keeps you going for short periods when the going gets tough. For the long haul you need to stop trying to force yourself and start enjoying it!

I have to agree with Dave… I look forward to going to the gym… granted, I do MUCH less cardio than you do, but I look forward to most workouts… and when I am not looking forward to them, I feel even more rewarded when I make it through those days… I’ll stick with you rock…I think you may have to go easy for a few weeks, and I think you were rocking the best somewhere in the middle… I’d say get back to that point.. do what you were doing in those workouts… find the love again….

    Er,
I’m surprised you are so concerned with this. Take a step back from what you’re struggling with and realize that this is so you! You have an incredible ability to put every ounce of your being into something…when it interests you. If it doesn’t, no amount of encouraging, proding, chatising or pushing will make you do it (remember Mommy trying to get you to do homework when you were a kid!). Maybe you’re just done with this. Maybe you can find something that inspires you that is close enough that it will get you to the same result (crossfit or something else?). Or, if you want to reach this goal, even when you’re not passionate about it anymore, you can just make not doing it not an option. Treat whatever aspect of the goal like you did with the diet. Regardless of whether you felt like eating chicken or not, there was not other option in your mind. You just do it whether you “feel” like it or not or whether you have the time or not or whether you want to or not. I did this when I was lacking motivation during the UBBT and it works.

Wow…. these comments are amazing. Thank you!

I’m going to the gym tomorrow, we’ll see how things shake out after that… but you’re right – I need to want this more then anything eles
